Founded in 1964, University of Essex is one of the top universities in the UK with a rich history. The university is located in Essex County, the Southeast of England, and divided into three main campuses, namely Colchester, Southend, and Loughton. All the campuses are fully equipped with libraries, dormitories, sports halls, art zones, etc.

 

For over 55 years of establishment, the university is proud to be ranked 9th among UK universities for research quality, being the leader in social science research according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Focusing on comprehensively exploiting students and maximizing their capacity after graduation, University of Essex offers more than 165 clubs across various fields such as economics, culture, volunteering, sports, etc. Accordingly, Essex is always in the top 15 for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2019.

LOCATION

All three campuses of Essex are about 1 hour from London and close to Harwich station, very convenient for sightseeing and traveling. The largest one is placed in Colchester which is considered one of the oldest towns in the UK and suitable for dining, entertainment with many restaurants and bars. The next campus is invested in modern facilities by millions of pounds and situated in one of the UK’s safest towns, Southend, which is deemed very suitable for enjoying the UK afternoon tea culture or sipping coffee. Located in Loughton, the final campus is very convenient for commuting. It is just a 5-minute walk from the Debden subway station in London, located on the east side of the Central Line, 35 minutes from Liverpool Street bus station and very convenient to access to London's city centre. 

ACCOMMODATION

University of Essex provides free housing counselling services for students at all times. Besides the private housing leasing option, students can apply for the university dormitory. The university has many spacious apartments with the largest capacity up to 16 students, of which nearly half of them have toilets and private bathrooms. Currently, about 90% of students choose to stay in the dormitory.

University of Essex provides students with a full range of modern equipment for the purpose of learning, entertainment, health training, etc. There is also a Sports Day (also known as “Derby Day”) in conjunction with the University of East Anglia, which is one of the two universities’ biggest events for friendly matches between sports clubs. 

 

Also, a welcome week shall be held at the beginning of each semester with full of pre-departure information, directions and events. Pick-up service at Heathrow and Gatwick airports and shuttle bus to Colchester campus are also scheduled at the beginning of each school year. The university also offers a free English Supplement Program in the fall and spring.

ACADEMIC TRAINING PROGRAMMES

University of Essex offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, suitable for students’ purposes and possibilities. Its main faculties are included: Human Resource Management, Law, Natural Science, Engineering, User Science and Humanities, etc. In which, the most prominent are the following disciplines: 

  • 4 disciplines in the top 5 in the UK: Politics (1st); Sociology (1st); Accounting and Finance, History (2nd); Economics (3rd); Language (4th).

  • Art History is ranked 9th in the UK.

  • Electronic Engineering is ranked 11th in the UK.

  • English Level: IELTS 5.5

  • Tuition/year: £16,880

2. Pre-Master (1-2 semesters)

  • Required Qualifications: Graduated from university/college

  • English Level: IETLS 5.5 (no band below 5.5)

  • Tuition/year: £8,930/semester 

3. Undergraduate

  • Required Qualifications: Graduated from high school with GPA > 7.0

  • English Level: IELTS 6.0

  • Tuition/year: £16,860

4. Master

  • Required Qualifications: Graduated from university with GPA > 7.5

  • English Level: IELTS 6.5 

  • Tuition/year: £18,460

SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Essex offers a variety of scholarships for students having outstanding academic achievements and extracurricular activities.

  • Academic Excellence Scholarship: up to £5,000 for outstanding students enrolling in a Master's degree

  • Essex Global Partnership Scholarship: up to £2,000 for undergraduate students with outstanding academic achievements from the university’s partners.
